North West — your gas network is Cadent Gas
Cadent Gas owns and maintains the gas pipes across North West. This is the company that responds to a suspected leak here — not necessarily the one you pay.
Network is not supplier
Cadent Gas is one of four companies that between them run every gas pipe in Great Britain across eight licensed regions. It is a regulated monopoly, licensed by Ofgem, paid a fixed transportation charge recovered inside every supplier's unit rate — regardless of who you switch to. It has no billing relationship with you and cannot change your tariff. Your gas supplier — the company you pay and can switch freely at any time — is a separate, competitive business. Ofgem's find my supplier guidance, and the gas industry's central registration system run via the Meter Point Administration Service, work on exactly this split.
Cadent Gas also runs East of England, North London and West Midlands, its other licensed regions in Great Britain.
Postcode areas covered
Cadent Gas runs the North West licence across postcode areas including:
Postcode boundaries were never drawn to match gas licence boundaries, and unlike an MPAN, an MPRN carries no region code — so treat this list as a strong first guess and confirm with Cadent Gas directly if you are near the edge of the area.
Independent gas transporters
On some newer housing estates and business parks, the pipework serving the site was built and is owned by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) rather than Cadent Gas directly, even though it physically connects into the same national transmission system. If your development was built in the last two decades, check your bill or the Meter Point Administration Service record for the actual network name — the national emergency number, 0800 111 999, still applies regardless of which transporter owns the final few metres of pipe.
- No. Cadent Gas is the Gas Distribution Network (GDN) that owns and maintains the underground pipes carrying gas to your property across the North West licence area. It does not sell you gas and does not appear as a billed party on your statement. Your gas supplier — the company you pay and can switch — is a separate business such as Octopus Energy, British Gas or E.ON Next, and it pays Cadent Gas a regulated transportation charge, built into your unit rate, to move gas down the pipe to your meter.
