Does my postcode area tell me exactly who supplies me?

It tells you your electricity distributor, gas network and water wholesaler — the fixed infrastructure companies for your location, which cannot be switched. It does not tell you your energy supplier, which is the company you pay and can switch freely. Postcode boundaries were also never drawn to match network boundaries, so a handful of areas straddle two networks — those pages say so explicitly.

What is the difference between a distributor and a supplier?

The distributor (DNO for electricity, GDN for gas, wholesaler for water) owns and maintains the physical network in your area and is fixed by location. The supplier is the company you have a contract with, that bills you, and that you can switch at any time. Every supplier uses the same local distributor regardless of which one you choose.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland runs a separate energy and water market to Great Britain: the Ofgem price cap does not apply, electricity distribution is NIE Networks, gas is NIE Networks (Belfast area), Phoenix Natural Gas or firmus energy depending on postcode sub-area, and water and sewerage is universally NI Water.
