BT — Northern Ireland: a separate market to Great Britain

Every Northern Ireland postcode starts with BT. Its energy and water markets run on entirely different rules to England, Scotland and Wales — including no Ofgem price cap.

Why BT is different

Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and Northern Ireland run separate energy markets under separate regulators — Ofgem for GB, the Utility Regulator for Northern Ireland. The Ofgem price cap on default tariffs, including the October to December 2026 figures published elsewhere on this site, has no application in Northern Ireland. Prices there are set by each supplier and reviewed by the Utility Regulator through its own separate framework. Anyone quoting a "price cap" figure for a BT postcode is describing the wrong market.

Electricity: NIE Networks

NIE Networks is the sole electricity Distribution Network Operator for all of Northern Ireland — there is no regional split as there is across Great Britain's 14 DNO licence areas. NIE Networks owns the wires, poles and substations and responds to power cuts; it does not sell electricity and does not set your tariff. Your electricity supplier is a separate business you choose and can switch — options in Northern Ireland include Power NI, SSE Airtricity, Electric Ireland and others.

Gas: Phoenix, firmus or SGN Natural Gas

Mains gas in Northern Ireland is a patchwork rather than a single network. Greater Belfast is served by Phoenix Natural Gas; a group of towns west and north of Belfast — including Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Coleraine and Larne — are served by firmus energy; further pipeline extensions since have brought gas to additional towns under both networks. Large swathes of rural Northern Ireland have no mains gas connection at all and rely on oil, LPG or electric heating instead. Confirm your own network from your bill or the Utility Regulator's published network maps rather than assuming from your BT postcode alone.

Water: NI Water

NI Water is the single, publicly owned provider of water and wastewater services for the whole of Northern Ireland, for households and businesses alike. There is no competitive retail water market in Northern Ireland of the kind that exists for non-household customers in England — every customer, domestic or commercial, is billed by or through NI Water (household water and sewerage charges are currently not billed separately in Northern Ireland, being funded through regional rates instead).

Distributor is not supplier — same rule applies here

Exactly as in Great Britain, the company that owns the wires, pipes or water mains in Northern Ireland is not who you pay. NIE Networks, Phoenix Natural Gas, firmus energy and NI Water are all regulated monopolies with a fixed service area; your supplier is a separate business you can shop around for and switch.

  • No. The Ofgem energy price cap covers Great Britain only (England, Scotland and Wales). Northern Ireland has its own separate energy market regulated by the Utility Regulator, with its own tariff comparison and switching rules — not a price cap in the GB sense.
