Why West Midlands pays what it pays

The unit rate is set mostly by wholesale costs, which are the same everywhere; the standing charge is set mostly by the local network. National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the wires in this region (every MPAN here begins with 14), and its allowed charges — plus the cost of keeping supply to sparsely populated areas — are what make West Midlands the 10th-cheapest of the 14 regions for the electricity standing charge and 3th-cheapest for the unit rate. Check the first two digits of your MPAN with the MPAN decoder if you are near a regional boundary.

If you run a business in West Midlands

None of these figures apply to a business supply. Non-domestic contracts are not capped, deemed rates after a contract ends are routinely 40–100% above the domestic cap, and the only protection is the contract you sign. The tariff benchmark shows where a business rate sits; a free 48-hour contract review finds the cheaper option.

FAQs

West Midlands

What is the energy price cap in West Midlands from October 2026?
25.60p per kWh and 57.23p a day for single-rate electricity, 7.90p per kWh and 29.71p a day for gas, for Direct Debit customers. On typical use that is £1,708 a year — £16 below the Great Britain average.
How much is the standing charge in West Midlands?
57.23p a day for electricity and 29.71p a day for gas on Direct Debit — £317 a year before any energy is used. West Midlands ranks 10 of 14 regions for the electricity standing charge (1 = cheapest).
Is prepayment cheaper in West Midlands?
The prepayment unit rate is lower (24.82p electricity, 7.64p gas) and the standing charge is levelised with Direct Debit, so a typical prepayment household pays £1,664 against £1,708 on Direct Debit. Standard credit is the most expensive at £1,845.
Which network covers West Midlands?
National Grid Electricity Distribution is the distribution network operator; its charges are the main reason the standing charge differs between regions. MPANs in this region start with 14.
Did the cap go up or down here?
Typical Direct Debit use costs £1,708 this quarter against £1,648 in July–September 2026: up £60. Gas rose everywhere; the electricity standing charge fell because VAT was removed.
