What a kWh costs you

At 7.97p a kilowatt-hour, Ofgem’s typical 9,500 kWh a year costs £757 in units plus £108 in standing charge. A 24 kW combi boiler running flat out burns about £1.91 an hour; a gas hob ring around £0.16. Gas remains roughly a third of the price of electricity per unit, which is why a gas boiler is still cheaper to run than direct electric heating and why a heat pump needs to deliver about three units of heat per unit of electricity to break even on running cost.

Gas bills are metered in cubic metres or hundreds of cubic feet and converted to kWh using the calorific value printed on the bill (around 39.5 MJ/m³ and a 1.02264 volume correction factor); a reading error at that conversion step is a common cause of a disputed bill, and the back-billing calculator covers the 12-month limit on catch-up charges.

FAQs

Gas prices

How much is gas per kWh in the UK in 2026?
7.97p per kWh on average for Direct Debit customers under the cap from 1 October 2026 (7.82p in East Midlands to 8.17p in Southern England), plus a standing charge of 29.68p a day. Prepayment and standard-credit rates differ slightly.
Why did gas go up so much in October 2026?
Wholesale gas rose through the assessment window (19 May to 18 August 2026) on the back of the Middle East conflict, and gas is priced almost entirely on wholesale cost. The unit rate rose from 7.33p to 7.97p — 9% — while electricity rose 1%.
Is a fixed deal cheaper than the cap?
Often, in autumn 2026: fixed tariffs were being priced below the October cap for most households, and the January 2027 cap was forecast to rise again. Compare the unit rate and standing charge together, not just one.
What do businesses pay per kWh?
Business rates are unregulated and depend on contract date, volume and credit; deemed and out-of-contract rates commonly sit 40–100% above the domestic figure. A contract review is free.
